The Revised Ethical Guidelines of Spiritual Directors International strongly urge all spiritual directors to be under supervision. Supervision is an ethical issue in spiritual direction because we owe our clients the very best . . . . and sometimes we need additional ears and eyes to do this. I offer individual supervision in person or on FaceTime, Zoom, or old-fashioned phone calls.
I visualize individual supervision as two peers, both spiritual directors, sitting on benches sharing recollected dialogue and information about particular cases. Of course, the bench is only an image. Supervision may occur virtually or in an in-person setting.
My definition of supervision is by Maria Tattu Bowen, PhD, of Together in the Mystery: "Supervision is a compassionate, contemplative conversation between peers that ultimately fosters the well-being of the absent other" (Participant Workbook, SDI Webinar, Reimagining Supervision, 2016).
I was trained in the supervision of spiritual directors by Lucy Abbott Tucker, M.A., at North Park Seminary, Chicago, in 2018. I have adopted Tucker's book Spiritual Direction Supervision: Principles, Practices, & Storytelling as the basis for my individual supervision. It is important to note that traditionally, supervision has focused on the inner movements of the spiritual director using reconstructed sessions or recollected dialogue (often termed verbatims.) I deal with inner work in supervision, allowing for skill-building, education, and consultation as necessary and appropriate.
For a single one-hour session of individual supervision, I request $60. Please tell me if it is necessary to scale this fee to your possibilities. I am committed to supervision for all spiritual directors, regardless of their financial circumstances. The frequency of supervision should be gauged in terms of the number of clients a spiritual director works with. I do not work with peer supervision groups at present.
If you are interested in supervision for a single session or more, please contact me using the Contact form page on this website.
